The City of Lives
The Elder Trio is one of the City’s most enduring mysteries, while also being a simple fact of daily life for every inhabitant. The Trio – Ancient, Venerable, and Eldest – rule the City, normally with a loose, lassez-faire hand, but occasionally stepping in directly on a certain issue (or individual). The thing is – nobody knows where they do their ruling from, what issues will provoke their response – or even what they look like. Reputed to come from a far-flung Realm – or perhaps even beyond the Realms altogether – the Trio came to the City many generations ago, showing a mastery of Crafting that allowed them to overcome the entire City’s forces with only their own power. Or perhaps they raised an army from the City’s populace, or right from the ground. Or perhaps their was no conflict, and it was merely their popularity that ensured their place on the throne. Not only are the records of the Trio’s arrival lost, but the few elders who are still around find that their memories are muddled and unclear. All that is certain is that after a time, the Monarch of Light was deposed and the Elder Trio had taken his place.
Since then, the Elder Trio have become more and more reclusive, moving from the palace to an isolated townhouse, then to a Relicshaped impenetrable fortress, and finally to – who knows? Their missives arrive in parliament haphazardly, they arrive in person even less often, and nobody can contact them if they do not wish it – yet they will sometimes respond even to a child’s cry upon the streets of the Lost District, unheard by all others.
The Elder Trio have a curious effect on the onlooker. Every person sees something different upon looking on Eldest, Venerable, or Ancient – every bloodline counts them as one of their own, and no two individuals can agree on exactly what the Trio looks like. The one constant is that they appear as someone the viewer admires – a proud Promethean may see the original Prometheus and two of his children; a Leovite may see the legendary founders of the Church of Light; a Rural might see a trio of proud oxen.
